Volunteer project Saint Bruno

Saint Bruno owes its name to Bruno Sserunkuuma, one of a total of 45 martyrs who were murdered between 1885 and 1887. At that time Christianity was something new in Uganda and it was seen by the King (Kabaka) of Buganda as idolatry. In 1894 the country became an English colony and slowly but surely Christianity became the most important religion in the country.

The school is run by the parish of our partner, Father James. There is a kindergarten, a primary school and a secondary school that are built next to the recently built church. It is located in the quiet neighbourhood of Ssaza, just slightly out of the centre of Masaka.

How can you help?

At Saint Bruno there are several things you can do as there are three different schools. At every school you can support the staff and depending on your knowledge and experience, we will find the best way for you to help. For example, do you already have a lot of experience in the educational field and do you like teaching new techniques to teachers? Or do you want to give a course on ICT after class hours? This can all be organised.

The kindergarten

If you come to assist at the kindergarten your day will mainly consist of playing, tinkering and drawing with the children. You will also help with all the other occurring activities.

The primary and secondary school

At the primary and secondary school you will be a teaching assistant. This means helping the teacher with his lessons, checking homework and helping children who have a little more trouble with the material. Depending on your wishes you can help one specific class or multiple classes and/or courses.

Help at multiple schools

It is also possible to alternate between different schools. That way you can see for yourself where you feel most at home.

Conditions for volunteers

Age
The minimum age is 16 years and there is no maximum age associated with this project.

Conduct of good behaviour
To be able to help with this project, you need a conduct of good behaviour from your (local) government or Interpol.

Funding the project

The projects we work with receive an expense allowance that leaves no room for self-enrichment. We work this way because we prefer to see the projects being helped through improvements to the project instead of financial donations. Unfortunately we know too many projects where the donated money has disappeared into the pocket of a worker.

On this page on our Joeboentoe website you will find how you can best help the project. If you raise funds, Joeboentoe will take care of a responsible spending of the money.
