What is Flexible Voluntary Work?
We understand that it is very difficult to prepare for volunteering in a poor country such as Uganda. You jump into an unknown world, as it were. Flexible Volunteer Work is for volunteers who would rather take a week or two to get to know the country and the different projects. Together with a coordinator we inventory the various projects in and around Masaka. We make a selection and together we visit a number of projects to see at which project you have the best feeling!
How can you help?
There are hundreds of projects in Masaka and surroundings that can all use your help. You can spend some time at a school or help making authentic barkcloth products for an orphan children project. There are also various agricultural projects where you can come and help.
With flexible volunteer work you can help on various projects. In this way you get a good picture of the problems in a developing country and at the same time you can help with projects that you feel good about.
- help with the construction of classrooms / wells
- painting or refurbishing schools / orphanages
- playing with children
- help with a food project or agricultural project
- support with courses at a school
- helping at a school for deaf and deaf-blind children
- 1 on 1 help with children who can use some extra help
- support and advise teachers
- give courses / workshops
- help with building a new website / facebook page for projects
- helping in an orphanage
Where will you stay?
That’s up to you! You can live with a local host family, in the Joeboentoe House or in some cases on the project itself.
Of course you can also combine it; for example, first a month in the Joeboentoe House and then with a host family. Almost everything is possible.
With Flexible Voluntary Work it is advisable to first stay in the Joeboentoe House for two or three weeks. In this way the transition is less intense and you can share your experiences with other volunteers. You can opt for a private or shared bedroom in the Joeboentoe House.
More information can be found on the Accommodation Page.
Flexible with locals
It is also quite exciting to live with a family for two or three months without knowing them prior to coming. With our local team you will visit three families before making a decision. Do you prefer to stay in the Joeboentoe House? No problem (as long as there is room for you).
A nice extra is that you help the family; they receive a generous financial compensation for hosting you!
On the project
With some projects it is possible to stay on (or near) the project. The advantage of this for you is of course the Uganda experience. In addition, we pay a large expense allowance to the project, so you benefit the project in two ways!
In some cases it is only possible to stay overnight with a host family or on the project because of the distance. Whether this is the case is indicated for each project.
You can already do Flexible Voluntary work for $ 799, – (stay 4 weeks)! This includes two weeks Joeboentoe House and the costs for extra support.
Look for a comprehensive overview of the costs on the page Costs of Volunteering
The minimum age is 16 years and there is no maximum age associated with this project.
Conduct of good behaviour
To be able to help with this project, you need a conduct of good behaviour from your (local) government or Interpol.
